A cultural landscape approach to community-based conservation in Solomon Islands Ecology and Society
Walter, Richard K; University of Otago; richard.walter@otago.ac.nz; Hamilton, Richard J; The Nature Conservancy, Asia Pacific Division; ARC Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies, James Cook University; rhamilton@tnc.org.
International environmental organizations have an increasing commitment to the development of conservation programs in high-diversity regions where indigenous communities maintain customary rights to their lands and seas. A major challenge that these programs face is the alignment of international conservation values with those of the indigenous communities whose cooperation and support are vital. International environmental organizations are focused on biodiversity conservation, but local communities often have a different range of concerns and interests, only some of which relate to biodiversity. One solution to this problem involves adoption of a cultural landscape approach as the ethical and organizational foundation of the conservation program. In our...

Export Performance in South Pacific Countries Comparatively Well Endowed with Natural Resources: Solomon Islands and Vanuatu, 1960 to 1999 AgEcon
Fleming, Euan M.; Blowes, Anita.
Stochastic dominance analysis was used to assess export performance in two Melanesian countries of similar size and structure that are comparatively well endowed with natural resources: Solomon Islands and Vanuatu. Total export values increased over the study period in Solomon Islands, brought about by a significant increase in the value of non-agricultural resource exports. Agricultural exports showed small increases but the average annual rate of growth was only 1.3 per cent for agricultural export values compared with 10.7 per cent in non-agricultural export values. The record of commodity export performance in Vanuatu over the study period was less impressive, with a small average annual decline in total export values. This decline was caused by...

Governance of Aquatic Agricultural Systems: Analyzing Representation, Power, and Accountability Ecology and Society

Aquatic agricultural systems in developing countries face increasing competition from multiple stakeholders over rights to access and use natural resources, land, water, wetlands, and fisheries, essential to rural livelihoods. A key implication is the need to strengthen governance to enable equitable decision making amidst competition that spans sectors and scales, building capacities for resilience, and for transformations in institutions that perpetuate poverty. In this paper we provide a simple framework to analyze the governance context for aquatic agricultural system development focused on three dimensions: stakeholder representation, distribution of power, and mechanisms of accountability. Case studies from Cambodia, Bangladesh, Malawi/Mozambique,...

The transfer of a collection of bird skins from the Solomon Islands via Australia to Italy in the late 19th century Naturalis
McAllen, I.; Borgo, E.; Violani, C..
An attempt is made to reconstruct the trail of a collection of birds from the Solomon Islands to museums in Genoa (Museo Civico di Storia Naturale “G. Doria”, Genova), Turin (Museo Regionale di Scienze Naturali, Torino) and Milan (Museo Civico di Storia Naturale, Milano), Italy, with the aid of museum specimens, documents and letters. The birds of this collection were described in the 1880s by Edward Pierson Ramsay of the Australian Museum in Sydney. Type specimens of four taxa of Solomon Islands birds are involved.

The Winteraceae of the Old World. VII. Zygogynum in the Solomon Islands (incl. Bougainville) Naturalis
Vink, W..
A review of the character distribution in the Zygogynum representatives from the Solomon Islands (and Bougainville) shows a rather wide variability in ranges of numbers and sizes, often with distinct differences between islands or altitudinal ranges. However, the morphology is rather uniform. The four species recognised by A.C. Smith had to be synonymised, but a new taxon deserved recognition. The name Bubbia is explained.
